Feb. 29th New Facebook: 6 Things you Need to Know

Fellow Lujurian, Kevin McNulty, here to talk you down off the proverbial ledge.

Some freaky stuff happened over night to your Facebook profile, and you may be starting to twitch a little about this time.

So far, for each of the following Facebook changes announced on their blog, about 20, 000 people have posted responses complaining about the changes.  That sounds like a lot until I tell you that 748,980,000 people didn’t complain.  In other words, it’s this all over again.

So here’s your quick and easy guide so you can catch up with Facebook and get on with your day. Click “Click to Continue” to get updated in under 5 minutes…

So what are the changes?

Let me explain… no, there is too much. Let me sum up:

1. Top Stories and Most Recent now in one News Feed

Facebook’s own blog summed up this change nicely: “When you visit Facebook, you should see the things you’re most interested in…” So they are trying to make sure you do by ditching the old Two-Option News Feed, which made you choose either Top Stories (popular stuff in order of popularity) or Most Recent (chronological order).

That is SO yesterday…

Replacing it is a single News Feed which shows you both Top News and Recent stories.  Which you see where depends on when you last checked Facebook. If you haven’t been on in a while, you see Top Stories because you may miss something important by virtue of not scrolling through all of your friends’ posts since you last logged on. If you have been on recently you see Recent Stories since you haven’t missed anything important and there are not that many posts for you to wade through.

Don’t be afraid – you still get to see everything.

If you haven’t visited Facebook for a while, the first things you’ll see are top photos and statuses posted while you’ve been away. They’re marked with an easy-to-spot blue corner.

Don’t you feel hipper already?

If you check Facebook more frequently, you’ll see the most recent stories first. Photos will also be bigger and easier to enjoy while you’re scrolling through.

Hey look, photos just got a butt-load better too. Literally a butt-load. It’s a technical term.

2. Ticker becomes official

The ticker is a live-feed area that sticks to the upper right corner of the screen and gives you a running play-by-play of what is happening literally right now.  Facebook has been playing around with the Ticker in various forms for a while now on a small scale, but now it is rolling out to everyone.  Click on anything in ticker to see the full story and chime in – without losing your place.  Seeing it move in real time is a little distracting and more than a little creepy if you think about it too long.  But we predict like all other Facebook changes people will hate it for two weeks, and then be unable to remember Facebook without it afterward.

I be creepin’ on your Ticker, yo.

3. The Subscribe Button

The Subscribe button allows you to set just how much you want to hear from a person. In fact, Facebook will now allow you to subscribeto someone even if you’re not friends (or let others subscribe to you). The latter only works with posts set to public. You’re already getting your friends’ posts in News Feed. With the Subscribed button, you can choose how much you see from them:

  • All updates: Everything your friend posts
  • Most updates: The amount you’d normally see
  • Important updates only: Just highlights, like a new job or move

You can also decide what types of updates you see. For example, you could see just photos from one friend, no stories about games from another, and nothing at all from someone else.  You set it by visiting the person’t profile and hovering ove the Subscribe button.

No one wants to admit that Facebook can figure this stuff out for us… but they totally can.

Don’t want to set each one of your friends individually? Well, by default, all of your friends have been set to “Most Updates” which covers the majority of what you’re interested in.  You can then just reset the firends from whom you want All Posts or those from whom you want Only Important.  You can also use…

4.  The New Friend Button with Smart Lists

Now whenever you friend someone – or if you hover over the Friend Button on their profile – you have a few options you didn’t before. At the top of the list, you can easily set someone to “Close Friend” or only an “Acquaintance.” The former will automatically set their Subscription button to “All Posts” and the latter automatically sets it to “Only Important.” Also, you will receive a notification when someone in your Close Friends list makes an update so you are sure not to miss it.

Don’t kid yourself, you are one smelly sock from moving to the acquaintance list.

Also, Facebook has anticipated (correctly in my case) that the hardest part of Friends List (or Google+ Circles for that matter) is that you have to curate the lists. So now, you’ll see smart lists that create themselves and stay up-to-date based on profile info your friends have in common with you–like your work, school, family and city. Facebook analyzes your work history, school, family and location to determine who will be added to your Smart List.

Yes, I went to California State University, Fullerton. You want fries with that?

You will also see the Friend and Subscribe buttons also work from the user’s hovercard when you mouse over their profile pic or name.

5. “Profile” disappears

The old right-hand corner trifecta “Home,” “Profile” and “Account” have parted ways.  Instead of Profile, you now have a small thumbnail and name of the user you’re logged in as – that should make things clearer when you are using Facebook as a Page.  Also, the “Account” has been replaced by a simple down arrow so you can access all your account, privacy and logout settings.

Yes, I know the ferret has more hair than I do.

6. Last but not least…

There are several smaller updates that are also rolling out:

  • You no longer need 25 likes on a business page in order to grab a custom URL
  • There is now a “Friend Activity” feed on business pages so that people can see how their friends interact with your page.

  • Facebook will try to not choke your inbox by emailing you a daily summary of the “less important” notifications instead of individual ones. If it makes you feel more alive to have a full inbox, you can change it back to individual emails on the notifications page .
  • Posts or comments in another language prompt the appearance of a “translate” button.
  • Posts that have been shared will now include a link you can follow to see who has shared them.
  • You can now post birthday wishes to peoples’ walls without ever leaving your home page. Just click the birthday’s link in the upper right, and watch the magic:

Now if only it would type for me.

If there are more updates forthcoming, we’ll update this post, so check back frequently.

Does Facebook ever bother to ask its users what changes we want? How about we finally got used to the last round of changes so just LEAVE IT THE F**K ALONE!

    • kimberly says:

my fb is all messed up and I cant figure anything out now and I cant see any older post or refresh my page or anything! I really wish they would leave this alone!

    • Alex says:

Sorry to hear your not liking the changes Joseph – The changes have thrown us a curveball, but we have to learn how to hit it if we want to stay in the game!

    • momto5 says:

go to your account settings and change your language to English UK…it at least gives you some of your old settings back…apparently they are experimenting with the US first… its still off the normal but its better.

    • Craig LaForte says:

We may have to try Google +

    • They’re the new Microsoft, they seem to know better than us what we like or not and what we want or not. Hate it!

      • Alex says:

What is your least favorite feature of all Denis?

        • It’s that new News Feed. I liked having the option to see all posts in chronological order and decide for myself which ones I was interested in. Now, if I understand correctly, some posts I’ll never see because some algorithm will decide for me that I have not enough affinity with the contents or the person who wrote it. I hate that.

          • support says:

That’s right.. It’s called EdgeRank. I hate that you can either get EVERYTHING with the ticker, or some with the news feed, there is no in between ya know?

          • KarenX says:

I ended up making a new list called “Friends” that I added everyone to. When I click on this Friends list, it shows me everyone’s updates in chronological order like the news feed used to, and I don’t see things like the ticker. It’s handy.

      • Sarah Kate says:

I just wish they gave us the option to remove the ticker (or remove your own actions from showing up on it) and disable Top Story. I just want to see my feed as it actually happened, not have certain posts shoved down my throat. And the ticker is creepy.

      • jane weller says:

Agreed. BIG BROTHER! Face Book use to be FUN! and USER friendly. It’s now a SLOG and a BORE. They have to justify their huge SALARIES somehow… otherwise we may just suspect that they are sitting on their bums doing nothing….

      • Nancy says:

Yeah I really like the way that they decide for us what we want and don’t want. How would they like it if we went around changing their business and making it more difficult for them? And by the way, just who is it that is making these decisions for us? Someone who is sitting at a desk all day and has nothing better to do than meddle in other people’s business. I think the public should have the say..not some corporate idiot who has no idea what I want!

    • John says:

They don’t want us to get too cozy and comfortable. They’re turning people off, just like Yahoo with the mail – where many left and went with g-mail.

I think they have a nerve assuming that like well-trained robots, we’re all supposed to tell them where we went to school and where we work, and that they can officiously meddle in our personal lives.

They also had the nerve to let mylife dotcom post on my wall and make it look like I said those thingts.

Whoever is really in charge over there needs to clean house and downsize the payroll.

      • Michele says:

You let mylife.com post on your wall when you granted it access. That’s why I allow access to very, very few apps.

        Always read the fine print.

      • ppop says:

Wow, I have never seen so many immature internet whiners in my life.

1.) You can shrink the ticker bar so it only shows one realtime update at a time, JUST DO IT! 2.) If you don’t like the marked “top story” you can UNMARK IT so it doesn’t SHOW UP AGAIN.
3.) Why sort out 3800 friends on the subscribe list when you can individually fix a few at a time in the feed? Over time, perhaps a few days, FB will understand what you like and don’t like, and wont show all 3800 subscribed content, EVEN IF YOU ARE subscribed to 4million friends!!
4.) Aside for the top menu bar and new lists on the left, the feed is EXACTLY the same. Top Stories and Recent Stories have been around for YEARS…they just now decided to mark the top stories as an indicator.
5.) When you run to Google+, do you really think they’re NOT going to change anything in the next year??? Hello, they’re called “DEVELOPERS”. They “develop”. If they didn’t constantly develop the websites and social media and not do their job, they would be called “MAINTENANCE”.
6.) $50 those who sprint to Google+ for the switch will slowly come jogging back to Facebook…just give it a few weeks. Plain and simple, Google+ is Google’s pitiful answer to Facebook, and you can’t fix what isn’t broken!

        • Zee says:

6.) $50 those who sprint to Google+ for the switch will slowly come jogging back to Facebook…just give it a few weeks. Plain and simple, Google+ is Google’s pitiful answer to Facebook, and you can’t fix what isn’t broken!

THEN WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO FIX IT?

    • molly says:

how about when you pay for the product they will start asking you. until then you use it for free. if you dont like it, dont come around.

      • support says:

Good point. However Facebook relies on the masses of people, without the support of those people, Facebook will crumble, so they should take in the consideration of the people right?

    • William Boughan says:

yeah the new changes are only more confusing than the way it was i wish face book would stop make these changes the average Facebook user really does not want new changes or new looks to their profile or home pages

    • wgat is going on with facebook i really dont get what is going on? it needs to go back to how it was please!!!!

    • Joseph B says:

I’m with ya on this one. This blog post is a joke, in my mind. Why do I say that? Because the entire tenor of the article reads like a company man…does he work for Facebook? Sounded like it to me. It was a big enough mess from the last round of “upgrades” they put in. They never ask us what WE need. They keep us at arm’s length, so we never have a direct link to anyone at FB. Have you ever emailed them with a complaint? I have…numerous times. You get an auto-response, and you’re always asked for your patience. BS! Man, I am tired of being patient. I don’t care what changes they make, IF they offer us the option to OPT OUT of it. Hey, here’s a thought…how about setting the news feed and profile walls up so WE can set up what we want to see WITHOUT their restrictive choices? How hard does that have to be? It’s just a matter of a bunch of logic switches. Yeah, a hundred million people didn’t complain yet. How many of them were so confused they just logged off? OR don’t care? OR haven’t logged on into this firestorm of a mess yet? How many of them never complain online, no matter how much they hate it?
This company guy didn’t give a very balanced view of the issues, and that is a disservice to every one of us. Let’s face it. If it weren’t for us, Facebook wouldn’t exist, and, they need to remember what happened to myspace not that long ago!

    • Judy says:

Nobody asked you to mess up facebook, because of all your changes its no longer fun, myspace did the same thing, I say we should all boycot facebook, I bet they get the message then, this is a wast of time they dont care, they will do what they want.

    • Barbara says:

I am having a problem with the “close friends” or acquantances. What there is no middle ground? Everyone on my list is not my close friend, but I do want to hear what they are doing and where they are going. I think you should leave the simple option of “friend”.

    • When are we going to get a dislike button?

  2. [...] Posts that have been shared will now include a link you can follow to see who has shared them. To find out more information visit: Facebook blog  original source [...]

  3. Chris Cree says:

I think the lists feature will be my favorite change once I have the time to go through and assign my friends to different lists. That is one of those things that is much easier to do along the way rather than go back through and do after the fact.

I’m not so keen on the news ticker because I don’t see anyway to pause it or turn it off. It’s a little overwhelming to me.

All in all it seems to me the changes are designed to keep more people actually on the Facebook site rather than accessing via apps and whatnot. From that perspective they all make sense to me.

  4. I am thankful for this article. In the past I would have to figure out all the changes. Now all I have to do is read your well written blog. No surprises waitinf around the next corner! thank you Lajure for posting!

  5. Why must Facebook continuously try to fix things that are NOT BROKEN??? This new layout SUCKS, and we need a way to go back to the way it was.

    • ashamy says:

Facebook has never been broken John! They are only trying to optimize the platform for you and me – take advantage of it. Better be one of the first to learn it than the last ;)

Be grateful they are paying attention! – Alex

  6. grelfod says:

    …748,980,000 people didn’t complain…
either they haven’t logged in yet or they don’t remember they even have a FB page (and a great many may be sheeple too) not to mention the folks that have many FB pages so they can isolate game feeds and family, etc.

    • ashamy says:

@Grelfod – The idea is you don’t need multiple FB pages to isolate those feeds anymore! You can now control what you see through lists and subscriptions. Start customizing your privacy and you may end up liking what you find. – Alex

    • shana says:

I’m not a gambling person, but I would say Alex and ashamy are one and the same, and one of Facebook’s staff.

    • Tom says:

grelfod… thanks for commenting. I found that statement to be insulting as well. All it sounded like to me was an arrogant large company who decided that they not only know who your best friends will be, what news stories you will read, that some friends just aren’t worth getting any notifications on because they are rarely on FB and and you can leave them in charge of your life or hit the road. ie: sooner or later everyone will have to conform to the rest of the sheep. For those who like it great… for those of us who don’t …for our own personal reasons…we should have had the option to opt out of their “fabulous” changes.

    • Joseph B says:

That’s one that had me scratching my head, too! From whence does this author pull his numbers? Does this guy work for FB? Sounds like it to me. 200,000 sounds significant to me, but I’m thinking his numbers are well under stated. I know for a fact that many of my neighbors and friends have been flooding the news feeds, etc. with complaints. I guess none of that is included in his count. Only email, support complaints were a part. If that is the case, then I would encourage everyone to hit the support section and complain long and loudly until FB listens to us for once. I’m not saying that everything they’re trying to do is no good, but anything that does not offer the choice to opt out of their updates is wrong. Anything that includes a ticker that loads down one’s computer, making use of FB all but impossible, is wrong, anything that puts your actions up for the world to view without your knowledge or permission, is wrong. There are add-ons for Chrome to defeat the news feed ticker, but not the apps ticker; and they don’t stop pub. of your actions for other users to see, including, potentially, friends of friends. I usually set my permissions to NOT allow that kind of viewing, restricting to friends only. I don’t appreciate the potential that I can’t prevent my actions being published!

      • Lori M says:

Exactly! I hate the ticker and often choose not to be visible for chat because I just want to log in and play a game or do my own thing. People see my posts on the ticker and know I am online… I can’t enjoy being on my account incognito when I want to. The only way to get your name off their ticker is to have each of your friends take it off by going through a series of clicks which most people are reluctant or not interested in doing. I have twitter and rarely use it, why do I need something similar on FB? And don’t even get me started on the new timeline. My husband got it when it first came out, he HATES it and is now STUCK with it.

    • Rossanna says:

there are some folks who don’t seem to have a problem with the changes… I’m definately not a fan of the new FB

  7. Kath says:

Still sucks! I don’t want Facebook or Micro$oft or any other app deciding how I want things done. I’m perfectly capable of making my own decisions, thank you very much – I know where the delete key is. I’m making EVERY story on my feed a top story and I’m setting every friend to All updates! I will decide from there I want and what I don’t want. Stay the hell off my wall FB! Oh and if I want a Ticker – I’ll go to Twitter!

  8. Valli says:

You are assuming that facebook knows what I am actually interested in. It doesn’t.

    • Alex says:

Not a chance it does! Use lists and Top Stories to make those decisions yourself. No List they created is locked and everyone’s content can be controlled. Don’t let them lead you to believe you are helpless!

      • Steve says:

Balony! I want the ticker to go away — to disappear, without loosing my chat connections.

So smart guy – how can I do that?

Change for change’s sake is worthless because it takes my time and energy to figure out what I want – not what FB wants.

        Make FB “sticky” ???

        How about making FB useful?

        What a concept.

        • Alex says:

Hey Steve – I’m a Facebook user just like you, learning the ropes.

Complaining takes energy, too! Spend that time optimizing features that are hear to stay!

          • Princess Mom says:

Why should we bother learning these ropes when FB is just going to change things up in a couple of months anyway? I don’t want to dedicate my whole day/week/month to setting it back up the way it was. I also don’t want to have to explain to all my friends about the vacation pic from 1999 that FB has decided is a top story today. WTH? (And yes, my privacy settings are friends only. I just have many friends who don’t know my extended family and thus don’t need to see 12 year old pictures of them.)

      • Izabel Ganz says:

Can I just go back to the way it was, plese? Why have you robbed me of this pleasant place and introduced a Nazi-like bore?

  9. Krystal Quillin says:

I have actually had this “new” layout for well over a month now. I complain about it regularly in my status. However, this morning, mine was back to the old “most recent” or “top stories” again. I don’t know why mine changed back, but I’m glad it did! I could never get the blue triangle tabs to work and I just plain hated the layout!

  10. Janet Devine Smith says:

I hate the changes to Facebook. I have at least four groups that I belong to that don’t show up in my groups. Even though I don’t access them frequently, I want to get their updates and would like to post pictures.

    • Alex says:

Hey Janet – Haven’t done much research in groups – can you not subscribe? Do you not receive notifications when there are group updates?? Let us know!

  11. The reason you haven’t received MORE complaints is because many people don’t know how/where to complain!I personally don’t want to go through “TOP STORIES” that some one else determined is Important, nor do i want to ‘censor’ my friends! I enjoy posts from both friends & acquaintences,so why change;I also don’t like some one deciding what is IMPORTANT posts from friends!

  12. DON says:

After downloading the template in my computer, then how do I create the photo strip on top of some of my pages are missing like this one:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/75323015935/
    Thank you!

  13. David says:

Great summary – saved me some time – thanks!

    • Alex says:

I’m liking the new updates David! Gonna have to learn to live with them either way =D

      • Princess Mom says:

Who are you, Alex? In one post you say “Let us know” and in others you pretend you’re just a regular user. Sock puppet much?

        • support says:

Alex works for Lujure, as do I. He says “let us know” cause we are all interested in what you guy’s have to say over at Lujure. But, as individuals we are also just regular users shooting the breeze and equally interested in the topic as well. If that makes sense? haha

  14. JoAnna Odom says:

I HATE the live ticker!!! It’s stupid, not useful in ANY way for me…it only serves to distract me!!! PLEASE HELP ME FIND A WAY TO “KILL” IT SO IT DOESN’T APPEAR ON MY HOME PAGE. THE OPTION TO “KILL” THE FRIENDS CLASSIFICATION AND THE SUBSCRIPTION REQUEST, AS WELL!!! I don’t find the “friends” classification useful, nor will I be using it. Heaven help me if I’m going to subscribe to someone’s commentary if they aren’t already a friend. I don’t mind facebook making changes, but at least always give us the option to “kill” a change we don’t use or enjoy!!!

  15. Melissa says:

I hate these changes! I don’t need Facebook or anyone else telling me what stories will interest me. I am a big girl and can choose for myself! The old way was easy to choose how I wanted to see my newsfeed. It allowed everyone the option of viewing in the way that they liked the best. This way is not an improvement.

  16. Perry Goodfriend says:

Why aren’t updates from pages I administrate showing up in the main body of my feed? Are my customers seeing them, or do they just scroll by in the Ticker? If That’s the case, what’s the point of having the social reach of a FB business page, if my customers won’t see my updates? I don’t want to wait for them to be re-educated. It’s like you pulled the plug on part of my marketing plan.

    • Alex says:

They did it to all of us Perry – a large majority of Fan Pages were using the same strategy. We have to get creative and learn new ways to reach customers with the new features at hand. Adapt first and revolutionize Facebook Marketing!

    • Donna says:

I cannot use the ticker tape idea they have set up, and I know of many people who also can’t, As a result, anyone who has a vision issue or other problems will NOT see your updates. I missed one that I needed last night..because it ran on the ticker tape and I wasn’t sitting there, and even if I had been, I would not have seen it.

  17. Robert Eimiller says:

This new format is much too erratic and complicated… it moves too fast and the information is coming at you too fast. You are destroying Facebook…..

  18. Last, but not least,we can no longer get status updates ONLY,we have GAME status’ on here to scroll through; Why would we NOT want posts to appear in chronological order?DUH!We don’t want to read through old posts AGAIN !

  19. Celeste says:

I understand they’re trying to keep up with Google+ but the least they could do is try out the changes giving us the option to change things back. Also, they should notify us of the changes they are planning to make instead of us logging on and SURPRISE! I think it’s just inconsiderate and also I feel like they are not listening to what the people they have using Facebook want and nothing will make people jump social groups faster than feeling unappreciated! Listen up Facebook! Give us better options!

    • Alex says:

Celeste! There should absolutely be a “waiting” period were you can switch back and forth between old and new. Take the updates lightly and try to adapt to the new environment.

All things take time, and so does learning. Find things you like and don’t like and learn to work with it!

  20. Micaela Johnson says:

I do NOT like the changes. As I try to read what is important to me things keeps jumping back and forth
on the screen and then leave what I am trying to read. I am trying to keep up with the surgery a little
girl went through and that is just NOT happening. HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m going to stop using facebook
if this continues. Makes me sad as some things are important!!!

    • Alex says:

Hey Micaela! If you find a story interesting, click the blue triangle in the top left of the post to subscribe to future top updates!

      • Gina says:

NO. Don’t want to. Just want a straight, simple, chronological news feed. That’s all. I don’t want rolling comments updating on the left. I don’t want little blue tabs. I just want to see a straight list.

I do not want to subscribe to people. I do not want to manage subscriptions. I want to either have friends or not. I keep trying to unsubscribe and it keeps not honoring my settings.

I want to have my old profile back, and I want to be able to edit it the way I used to.

This is basically going to get me to unsubscribe from just about everybody and only stay on FB for a couple of closed groups I have, until they convert and f*ck up the groups (which is coming.)

        • Alex says:

Sorry to hear your displeasure! Let us know if you find a good way to display chronological posts – we would love to share with our users.

          • Rossanna says:

Someone already shared earlier and it works for me… I basically added ALL my contacts as Close Friends. You go to your regular list of Friends. Your friends will list in alpha order. At the right of each name is a tab – Friend with a checkmark. If you hover over it, you can change your friend to Close Friend. Just to make things easier for me, I added everybody to my Close Friends list. So now, instead of looking at regular feed, I click on the Close Friends list which shows up on the left hand of the screen. All posts/comments show up chronologically.

Thankfully, I only have friends & family on FB. I can’t even imagine the nightmare for folks who have hundreds and thousands of FB friends to sort this out.

  22. Rhonda says:

    I still hate it!!!!!!

  23. Craig Branson says:

I hate the new layout. It’s not how I use the service at all.

    I found that switching to middle-ware — a Firefox plug-in — mitigated this to me. It’s http://betterfacebook.net

And I also complained everywhere I knew how.

It’s a bit condescending of you to claim that most people haven’t complained. A previous writer had it right — they don’t know where to do it.

I complained on on the help forums, on the Facebook announcement page and to Mark Tonkelowitz’s email. Where else do you propose?

    • support says:

That was a broad generalization Craig – our slip up! What do you hate about the new Facebook Updates?? – Alex

      • Craig Branson says:

I don’t think their algorithm captures what I want to see.

I guess I don’t understand why I can’t look at thing sequentially if I want to on my news feed.

I was taught a long time ago that if something doesn’t make sense to you, try putting money on both sides of th equation. I am not gaining value from this, so it must make Facebook money.

        • Alex says:

You don’t see any value in only sharing with select groups as opposed to all friends??

          • Jessica Boyd says:

We were already able to share with certain people before through lists that WE chose to create. Having the News Feed split up into different sections on one page is too busy and harder follow. I have been missing posts from people I did before. If I didn’t want to see someone’s posts before, I could just hide them but it was still up to the user, not fb. This is very inconvenient.

          • Craig Branson says:

I must not use Facebook the way you do. I don’t friend people unless I want to see more about them. I unfriend them or hide them if I don’t want to see their material.

And that’s just it — this is about ME seeing their material. I set MY material to friends-only long ago.

There are no advantages to this new system to me. Only disadvantages. Your embracing of the technology, while new-worldy, does not take into account how people actually use the service.

I am well aware of the school of thought that says users shouldn’t lead design because they don’t know what they want, blah, blah, blah. But I am also familiar with the opposite — what happens when a service stops meeting its users needs. It makes them mad.

This change has empowered me and seriously pissed me off.

          • support says:

Can only hope for changes. The only problem is deciding where Facebook should draw the line where they listen to its users needs or go with their own “school of thought”. :/

          • Tom says:

Support… “The only problem is deciding where Facebook should draw the line where they listen to its users needs or go with their own “school of thought”” You must not be versed on business history. Every company, no matter what size, that doesn’t realize that it is all about the customer has gone under or had to get bailed out. The decisions being made should always be about customer service and the customer coming first! Obviously by the many posts and by comments like “only 20,000 have complained” customer care is not happening with Facebook. Many … Many of us are now waiting for a better mousetrap and Facebook will go the way of My Space.

      • justawriter says:

Easy. I want most recent posts, all the time. Even under the old format every morning I had to switch from bleeping top stories to most recent. Now I can’t even do that. I despise top stories and want to consign them to the nether world. Is that so hard for Facebook to understand?

  24. MARLENE says:

I HATE IT. STOP CHANGING THINGS. I COULDN’T SEE THE POSTS I WANTED AND TO COMPLAICATED. CHANGE IT BACK

    • support says:

Hey Marlene! Have you gotten a chance to pick your lists, so you CAN chose what posts you wanted?? You can chose what friend and content actually matters to you

      • Sophia says:

Ok ok I can make lists. I made a list and clicked, by hand the 269 people on my friends list who are important to me. If they aren’t important, I don’t have them friended. Customize blah blah blah. That’s nice but why on *earth* wouldn’t “I just want to see everything still” be an option? There is absolutly no good reason for that at all. Also with the cusomized list, I can’t add myself, so I still have to click back and forth between my everyone list and my wall to see if I got any comments. I understand you love all these option; but please explain with all the options, “just see everything” isn’t one of them and how on *earth* that increases our “flexibility.”

        • Alex says:

Hey Sophia! Changes aren’t my doing, I’m just learning and adapting like the rest of us. Totally understand your frustrations with the new features. You could try adding all of your friends to one list, so you could see them all in your news feed. Let us know if you find a work around or a way around it!

  25. Andrew says:

    Thanks for this. Very useful.

Buried away on point 6 of this update is the biggest news for me. Cue the land grab!

We have been building a number of facebook pages for our business (one for each geographical site) and have not had to worry about cyber squatting of our usernames yet as the 25 follower limit has been a good “hurdle”.

All our sites have the same format for the username (means that fans of one location can easily guess the other locations).

Saw this and realised that anyone who wanted to could now set up a competitor page. Yes they would be cybersquatting (against Facebook T and Cs) but I am not confident that facebook would treat it seriously (after all the location is not actually part of the business name).

So I started setting up the remaining FB Pages (I had been meaning to get to this, but the pages are run by our local teams and they need a bit of training before they can go live).

The first one went OK – got the userrname I wanted. Second new page I set up, FB tells me it needs 25 followers before I can grab the name. A colleague uses his account. Same thing. first page he sets up gets a username no problems, second one, 25 new follower limit.

My guess is that Facebook is allowing one page username per user (possibly per day?).

Great way to stop land-grabbing/page-squatting, but I’d really prefer they hadn’t dropped the 25 fan limit!

I have now stopped setting them up, and will have to see what FB does in the morning – will I be able to username the pages I set up today (with 0 followers)? Will I be able to set up a new page and grab the username tomorrow?

    Only time will tell!

    • support says:

Great research Andrew – Let us know your findings as you begin to test more today!

    • interactAbelSocialMedia says:

Actually, you can only grab one vanity URL on a page that has less than 25 likes. That piece of information has not been widely shared but I have a couple of business pages that I tried to grab URL’s for when this was first announced. I was only able to grab one and now have to wait for the magic 25 for the others.

      • Alex says:

Ahhh very interesting – Thanks for sharing that info with us, we will pass it along!

      • Andrew says:

Yep. It seems interactAbelSocialMedia seems to be right.

It does only seem to be one Vanity URL per user.

The way I have got round it is for my colleagues (and wife!) to be added as an admin. Grab the vanity URL, then (in my wife’s case at least) un-adminning them.

Seems to work OK (i.e. once it is grabbed, it stays grabbed).

  26. Im liking the “You no longer need 25 likes on a business page in order to grab a custom URL” change. Hopefully the pleading to others to LIKE a page will calm down.

  27. JoAnna Sponaugel says:

Hate It!! Don’t like the Ticker, or whatever you call it. Looks like you’re chasing people to Google’s new play, and haven’t tried Twitter yet, but after this I may, way too confusing, too much to remember, just give it back the way it was!!!!

    • support says:

The ticker is a turn off JoAnna, but have you gotten a chance to play with lists? That idea was uhh “borrowed” from Google +… – Alex

  28. I “HATE” the fact you think you can pick out what I want and don’t want to see on my page !!! I also don’t like the way I’m trying to read something and the screen jumps back to the top and I have to track down the story again only to have it jump back to the top again !!! I don’t like the feed on the right that invades peoples privacy and tells them what these people say and do !!! Don’t tell me that in two weeks I’ll forget all about how Face Book used to be , because if it stays the way it is now , I’ll change to another multi-media site like twitter or my space !!! You have taken things in your own hands without concideration for anybody else and I hope the creator of this “CRAP” gets a pink slip …..he deserves that much !!!! CHANGE MY FACE BOOK BACK OR I”LL LEAVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. vickie says:

Facebook, next time you want to make a change, do us all a favor and let the users vote. This new stuff is crazy.

  30. Travis says:

Ok, i’ve had the new layout for a few weeks. I like change and it’s actually not too bad after a few days. The top stories are actually from people I’ve clicked on or commented on in the past. I especially like how the photos appear in feeds now – that we can all agree is much better.

FB is evolving and bringing in (or copying) ideas from other social networks and based on the numbers – will probably continue to do so and in the process avoid losing members over others’ more advanced technology. I was all into g+ because I could easily choose where each post went. Now I can do that with FB and it much bigger user base.

    • Alex says:

I love your enthusiasm Travis! Facebook is finally allowing you to distinguish between real life groups rather than one group of “Friends”. The news feed is no longer a mega phone – it can be as small or as broad as you like it.

Confident others will come around when they realize the opportunity!

  31. fred barnett says:

  33. Pissed Off! says:

Why do you insist of fixing something that isnt broke??? Who are you to tell me what I might find important and want to read about?? Really, customizing our friends so that we are able to see what they post….WTF!!! No I dont need a sec by sec play, why CAUSE I DONT GIVE A SHIT!!!! This isnt a football game, just saying!!! I think this is one of the most retarded things FB has done in awhile. Oh and you go to see where to complain and it links you to different links and well there is no where to actually voice your opinion. Get a grip FB Administrators!!!!

    • Alex says:

News ticker is nuisance rather than informative. Lists will help you control not only what you see, but what others see about you. Could be useful for family, employers and other groups of friends! Play around with it and you may like what you find!

  34. themrs says:

has it occurred to anyone that the moving ticker will trigger serious problems for a lot of neurological problems (TBI, epilepsy, migraines and learning disabilities?). If you click to get rid of it it moves to your feed. I have no problems and it gave me a headache within 10 minutes because it moves in the corner of my eye. I cannot imagine my husband with TBI or someone with another type of issue. If FB were thinking, this would be known. People with most of those problems (and let em tell you 1 of 6 people has some form of neurological disorder) need the option to shut any movement off.

  35. Michelle says:

I hate it all…not all of us on here are friend based, I’m here for social media work, and with over 1000 pages and 800 friends related to network and the pages I admin, this DOES NOT work for me at all.

    • Alex says:

It may be tedious but separating into lists can be useful! If you want it all in one list, set it up that way!

      • Valerie Grace says:

A lot of people don’t have the time to set up lists or don’t know how to. There are people who got a FB acct. to relate to people & check out how others are doing during the day. My husband is new to the computer & has a hard time figuring out where to go for whatever. He asks me how to get somewhere or how to do something. He’s trying to learn it. I am busy myself & this is making my time more precious! Please change it back! I don’t have the time to try to keep updated with all you changes.

        • support says:

Valerie- I know exactly how you feel, my parents are constantly asking me questions trying to figure out how to work a computer.
I wish we could switch it back, but we don’t work for Facebook :/

  36. MARLENE says:

PUT BACK MY SETTINGS- I HATE THE NEW ONE- WILL U LISTEN TO THE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS!!!

  37. Michelle says:

And let me tell you a secret 748,980,000 is not a real number….just a guess but Id say 30% are FAKE profiles bought by corporation, don’t believe me, go check fiverr out. They have a false sense of how many numbers they have, and if only 20,000 ppl complained in the Facebook post, you aren’t including those who aren’t posting there, like the 90% of my friends.

    • Jessica Boyd says:

Something I’m not clear on. On the iPhone fb app, it shows “Recent Stories”, then “Earlier Today” but there is an hour of difference between the last post on Recent and Earlier. Am I not seeing all of the posts on my news feed? I actually want to see every post by everyone. The one’s I don’t want to see, I hide their news feeds so I don’t understand why it should be up to fb whose posts I see. Please explain. Thanks!

      • Alex says:

Hey Jessica – The ball is in your court! You must customize your Lists to receive updates from only those you wish. The Smart Lists Facebook created are completely customizable. Sure it takes time, but you will save some not having to sift through mindless news stories!

        • Jessica Boyd says:

Ok I already had my own lists before but I guess I will have to reorganize everything once again. I’m still confused on the hour lag between “Recent Stories” and “Earlier Today” on the iPhone app. Also it is inconvenient to have to group people by force when I already had them grouped as I had chosen. It’s not the end of the world as some are acting but it’s really inconvenient. I want to see everyone in news feed. That is why they are on my friends list. The ones I don’t want to see, I have hidden. It was so simple and it was still the user’s choice and not up to fb.

  38. Bill Reynolds says:

OK, so only a few of your members complained while the vast majority either didn’t realize they could, or didn’t think it would do any good, or were just too plain lazy to complain. Citing this is totally disingenuous on your part. A more valid statistic would compare the number of people who thought it was bad with the number of people who actively thought it was good. I’d wager serious money that you would get a totally different picture from that comparison.
Back before this particular (and I have never felt motivated to complain about any other FB changes) FaceQuake, whenever I opened FB I noticed that it defaulted to Top News. Before even trying to read the entries I changed it to Most Recent. Now I have to scroll all the way down and hope I don’t miss anything.
Excuse me, but with all due respect, who are you to tell me what posts I am most interested in? What is your algorithm based on? It certainly isn’t based on who I interact with the most since some of my friends with whom I interact the most were consigned to the Outer Darkness at the tail end of the page. Watson (from Jeopardy) couldn’t mimic what I may want to read and look further into and that isn’t a comment on me being smart and complicated, it is a comment on the current level of development of Expert Systems and AI. In any case, somehow I doubt that FB has invested in a State of the Art Expert System.
Getting my friends to switch to Google+ will be an effort, and, granted at this stage of the game Google+ will not have the same number of interesting pages and people to link to, but I cannot continue to function with FB for long given this latest change.

  39. Bobbi says:

I would love to be able to turn off the “top news.” I just want recent posts. I will scroll back in my news feed or go to someone’s profile to find a post I want to follow; I don’t want facebook telling me which posts they think are “top news.” so far, all of the “top news” has been stuff I don’t need to see again; it’s not top news to me. this feature is especially annoying when I’m using facebook on my phone, because the screen is small so I have to scroll farther. at the very least, make “top news” go away on facebook mobile!

  40. shana says:

I agree…finding a way to contact them to complain is almost impossible!! Also, the fact that strangers stories show up in my news feed and ticker is ridiculous, and an invasion of privacy. (I don’t care if their stuff is set to public, it should not be appearing on my page)

  41. Tony says:

I really wonder if they test any of these things with anyone ahead of time. Isn’t there a friends and family beta or anything? It sure doesn’t seem like it. You’d think somewhere along the way these testers would say “why are you doing this?” or “this is needlessly confusing”.

After all, we wound up with that weird combination of chat and messages, which also displayed a dozen people who weren’t even online. They finally just undid that.

It just seems like they constantly are looking to make Facebook more and more busy and more and more complicated. Often it’s at the expense of ease of use too, particularly given how often they move basic settings and items around.

It just feels like we’re guinea pigs for something new every week. They’ve made some good adjustments over the years, but people are getting increasingly annoyed when there is something new to adjust to almost constantly.

    • Alex says:

People don’t like change Tony. Sure these changes will drive some users to Google+, but we will see how long that lasts. The idea behind these updates was inspired by Google+, control what you share. With a user base of 750 million, it would be stubborn to leave now. Learn and adapt or complain and leave!

      • themrs says:

Comparing FB as social network to benchmark issues in life such as change is utterly ridiculous! When windows changes I have the OPTION to go back to the old way if it is the interface I want and or need.

I don’t mind change but on a computer interface I would like the CHOICE to change and I would like to be able to shut down parts of it that are extremely distracting and potentially seizure inducing! They want to play update sure but please I am a 40 yr old woman I CAN decide if I would like that change or not. MySpace died out because it was cumbersome and frustrating…. did they not LEARN anything???

I use FB to work. I get paid to maintain the presence of companies and orgs online as part of my work. I now have to go through and make massive changes to many pages that I did not ask for and I certainly did not need. It will cost massive amounts of time and effort on my part.

The ticker though, I once again state is AWFUL and will be a problem for a LOT of people.

    • Sunny says:

Tony, I know that my daughter was part of the beta test, and she hated the changes and reported that. And she’s a Gen Xer in her 20′s, not an old lady Baby-Boomer like me!

  42. Ken O. says:

Keep it up until you say “What Happened? Where did everybody go?” Google looks better all the time

  43. Pamela says:

I don’t see anything wrong with the change’s lol not really that different in my eyes I’ll get used to the feed on the side of the page but that’s all I really see in the way of a big change….The one thing i was hoping for ,was being able to have music and fix up my profile cute lol so everyone could see it and not just the ones that have the program…..oh well maybe next time Thank for having Face Book I enjoy it!

  44. Robin Thomas says:

Great article- it saved me time checking out the new fb changes. I actually welcome most of these changes- it will streamline my fb experience, and I won’t be jumping all over the place to check on articles and friends. I know some people just don’t ever like change.. unfortunately for them, social media and technology is always about change… we just need to roll with it :~) Robin

  45. Cindy says:

I do love the lists. As I play a lot of games my feed is full of game posts and I was often missing family and “real” friends posts. So, I set up the lists and I’m a happy camper. I hate the ticker, mostly because I really don’t want my family to see how many and often I play games. I’m not a kid, well, maybe I’m in my second childhood – anyway, is there any way to eliminate my stuff from the ticker? Kind of an invasion of my privacy, don’t you think?

The feed thing is just ridiculous. Just give me everything chronologically and let me block what I don’t want. I’m a big girl.

    Can I farm on Google+ ?

    • Alex says:

I think it is invasion of privacy too Cindy! It’s like being on chat without being on chat!

You talking about FarmVille? No clue – you should go over and check it out!

      • David says:

There is nothing in the Ticker that wasn’t already available according to your privacy settings… :( All FB has done is consolidate it, so you don’t have to jump from one friends page to another to see it all…

        Sheesh!

Like others have said, I don’t have anyone on my friend list that I don’t want to hear from. I’m not some 14 year old kid with 900 “friends”, a tenth of whom I actually know in real life. So, to have Facebook presume to know who I want to hear from is…I can’t even articulate how offensive this is to me. I’ve been with Facebook since it was opened to the public and not just college students. Of all the changes, these most recent changes make the least sense. This hyper-customization is burdensome and counterproductive. Perhaps FB should consider developing a “simple” format for those of us who actually want to communicate with real life friends and offer an “advanced” format with uber customization options to the ‘net geeks out there who enjoy spending hours and hours tweaking lists and privacy settings to accommodate strangers they’ve foolishly added to their friends list and don’t really want to communicate with at all. I could go on a rather lengthy rant about particulars but I’ll spare you. Any time anyone complains we get the same line: “Everyone complains at first…” and then our complaints are cynically ignored.

  49. Pissed Off says:

Who the hell is Facebook to tell me what I would be most interested in….or what the top stories are? There was nothing wrong with the old layout! Actually, the old layout was crap too. It just gets worse and worse with every change you make. Seriously, I don’t mind change, it’s make the world go ’round, but too much of it is not a good thing either. Sure, we might get used to this format, in a few short months, but that’s when you guys will get bored and change it again. I signed up for Facebook so that I could reconnect with my friends. I didn’t plan to take a friggin 2 hour user guide course every couple months! I shouldn’t have to constantly check, and reset, my settings. What a pain. You made more work for all of us and have taken the enjoyment out of using Facebook. Wow, did you blow it.

    • Alex says:

I think once you spend the time to separate those friends into meaningful lists, that enjoyment will come back. Sure it stinks we have to change are settings and whatnot, but in the end you will have a much more organized profile.

  50. Schuyler Miller says:

I hate the new look to Facebook. It’s very hard to find anything that I want to see. You’ve decided what is important to me and I don’t like it one bit. Please put it back the way it was. My momma says “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it”. Please follow that advise.

  51. Cindy's Sister says:

    Uh-oh, Cindy. I’m going to tattle-tale. :-)

  53. Gordon says:

How do you migrate all your friends into different lists? Do you have to do it one at a time. Like unfriend them and then friend them in one of the list.

  54. Greg says:

Re, #6: “You no longer need 25 likes on a business page in order to grab a custom URL.”

This isn’t quite correct. You can do that with one page, but your second, and any others, will require the 25 likes. (I bumped into this and had a couple of friends test it. ) I think FB doesn’t want to be spammed with a ginormous number of custom URLs that will never get used. But who knows, maybe next week the policy will be different. :)

Facebook is a website most everyone uses for FREE. Apparently nobody likes change, but FB has changed before, everyone complained for a bit, n now everyone would likely complain if those changed got taken away.
The creator of FB doesn’t need to ask permission to change their website. They are actually well thought out ideas made to help (and all anyone can do is complain cause now they have to learn something new.)
Give the new FB a chance before you put it down. And remember: the owner of FB could always start charging your profile rent. THEN you would be entitled to complain.

    • Judy says:

The day they start to charge my profile “rent” is the day I am “entitled” to leave…and BTW I am “entitled” to complain because I am “entitled” to use my 1st Amendment Rights!

    • themrs says:

FB is not a free nice thing they do. FB generates income by participation through ads etc. It is not some giant benevolence in the sky. The more people the greater the ad base, the greater the ad base the more it can do. Your information for statistics and demographics etc all are part and parcel of what they make off of your “free” account. Smart companies learn from the mistakes of former ones (can we say MySpace anyone?)

  57. Liz loxley says:

  59. Kevin says:

You guys may not see it yet, but you are being groomed to be directed to those posts which FB decides is profitable for them. I predicted this the first moment “Top News” showed up; it’s an entity deciding, from within, what is important to you. That means that if you post a status update with a link that could make money, your status will more likely make a “Top Story,” after FB gets to that point. If you mention Fox News or ABC or Fannie Mae or a new novel, that can lead to referring url kickback sales for FB. Ultimately, you are being folding into a traffic stream that FB now will control. I’m out. Google+ (until they decide to force-feed me something).

Scary new world we live in. I’m glad I’m old. To go one step further, what is stopping FB from suppressing stories – after all, they are in total control, right?

Thanks again fb, getting use to it an learning but I LOVE IT!!!

  61. Robin says:

I hate this new change. And is there really more coming?
I don’t think I understand the subscribe button and the friend button. What is the difference? If I subscribe to someone that I’m not friends with do I see their posts and they don’t see mine? What if you subscribe to someone who is already a ‘friend’?
Facebook better be careful or they WILL get too big for their britches.

  62. Sunny says:

  69. Nancy Motsinger says:

I hate the new facebook. Way to go to get me to leave. So far I have not seen even one comment that is good. Way to listen to your users. Doing this on the day that Google Plus goes public is a plus also. Should make Google have a great day.

  70. Gabi says:

Well, I think the new tools are ok, – I did like it before just fine, though. The big issue I have with facebook is that they don’t answer their helpline when you have a real problem. Like all my top row pictures are invisible to me and all of my album pics also. I can only see them when I click each one separately… There was an “unhide all” button under my profile page and I clicked it, where after nothing happened to my invisible pics, but the button vanished also… Very frustrating!

  71. Jane doe says:

the most frustrating thing is that someone somewhere is getting paid a ton of money to do this garbage. Why do they continue to do this crap. I don’t want lists of crap, I don’t want a f’ing ticker in the corner.

    I want.
Everything in center, most recent at top, no top news crap.
    NO ADS
Ability to filter games etc. And see them separate from everything else.

THINK SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE. stop over complicating.

  74. Craig Miller says:

How about asking what our *least* favorite change is? Few of these seem like a benefit to users. I don’t want Top Stories? Why am I forced to see them? Why do you keep adding new Top Stories while I’m reading, giving me blocks of Top Stories, Recent News, more Top Stories, more Recent News? And the ticker just eats up memory. Unless I’m at the very top of my FB page, I can’t see it anyway. And if I’m there, those stories should pop up on my newsfeed. It makes no sense.

I’ve never complained about any previous Facebook change. But this new Top Stories/Recent News combo is terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

  75. donna says:

is there a way to change it back …there are rumors on twitter saying so ..works for some and not others. well i think you should have a vote and see who likes it and who don’t and see what the out come is i bet all vote for hate it and then u change it back

  76. lauren says:

I don’t hate the new FB… People hate it because they are used to using facebook the old way. FB has already introduced a certain user behaviour, then expects us to change it literally over night. If facebook rolled out changes gradually, I think they could avoid this type of community uproar. I do agree that you should be able to hide the ticker. Does anyone know how much user testing on Facebook’s end determines these changes?

    • support says:

Agreed on being able to hide it! As for testing, i believe they tested it on a few thousand users for about a month or two!

  77. tx20fan says:

Only thousands have complained when FB has millions hooked? Maybe it’s because they can’t even figure out their own page much less find where to send feedback to COMPLAIN! Yes FB, you have all the rats programmed to be upset for a couple of weeks and then they will SETTLE for your crap and get back in the maze. As Obama has shown us…CHANGE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN IT WILL BE BETTER. Stupid, busy page and ticker! If I read something and want to go back to it, I can’t even find it again. Hope the NEXT big thing is just around the corner, just the way FB took out Myspace. I’ll be one of the first to try anything that knocks THIS FB out.

  78. Mary Oliver says:

I dislike the new changes u made to my face book account, u should not choose what I wish to see or not..that is my decision to make and not yours!!!! I no longer have my friends to the left which when wanted to converse with them just clicked on em..now I have to type there name in on my new profile page to find em..I do not group ppl as friends/family/aquaintences..etc..I put them where I want em..this is also not a decision for u to make..it is mine..they r my family & friends..not urs!!! I have many more but this seems to b the top two that r bothering me today..I will keep u updated if I decide to even stay on facebook at all or will search another social medai..I AM VERY ANGRY THAT U CAN EVEN BELIEVE THAT U KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE MY FRIENDS FOR ME AND OTHERS!!!!

  80. Debra says:

Nope. They’ve gone too far this time. All they had to do was leave me a choice. The new layout is so absolutely chaotic and disordered. It isn’t even all viewable on my netbook screen. I will leave FB if they do not give me my choice of views back. This new layout BEYOND sucks. And I am one of the ones who usually does NOT complain but simply adjusts and finds my way around again.

  81. Best update by far is replacement of the profile link with the actual name of the profile. When you have multiple pages and a personal profile this makes life so much easier.

  82. KilroyWasHere says:

FB is spiraling down the shit hole. Reminds me of MySpace.

I have had a Google+ account for months. Now that Google+ is open to the public, I’ll be steering all my friends over there.

  83. tina says:

Facebook is free… You don”t pay for it…. you are allowed to use their website with no obligation… therefore.. they aren’t obligated to change anything.. for you

  84. Dixie says:

QUIT SCREWING AROUND WITH STUFF!!! Put it back the way it was and LEAVE IT ALONE! Why do they feel the need to “upgrade” anything without input from the people who actually use it? I think they think they are to big to go down. I am sure Myspace thought the same thing (anyone remember Myspace?) There is a new social network that will be pushing itself soon..I am sure Google will be out for FB users so I think FB should quit ticking people off.

  85. LAW888 says:

I just want to be able to click “Status Updates” and see my friends updates, IN ORDER, without any other page crap or game feeds when I am in a hurry….which is most of the time!

  87. David says:

    Just sayin’ ;)

Ticker “Fix” : Don’t like the “Ticker” updating constantly? Hover your mouse over it and scroll down… No more up to the minute updates!!!

  88. John says:

Previously I said they got rid of my lists – upon further perusal, no – they just re-arranged my access to them. When your boss has the furntiure rearranged in the office and you’re sitting somewhere else, that’s just plain rude. You will seek work someplace else.

Another wrong thing is to assume everyone has Family. That one is REAL rude.

And why should you have to lose an afternoon picking up the pieces of their meddling just to get your bearings all over again? I strongly urge everyone to DELETE their work history and school history. Don’t allow yourself to be categorized or assessed and placed into a little box.

  89. Kathy Pop says:

Some changes I like, but some- like the ticker, I don’t.

The vanity URL is only for the first page or one per account, any after that still need the 25 likes.

maybe FB could take a group of users to beta test changes in order to get their feedback before making them site-wide. I’d be willing to do that.

    Kathy

  94. Nancy says:

Wonder if they tested the movement of the “Ticker” for those with epilepsy. I’d give any amount to be able to turn it off. I don’t want to see what my friends post to their other friends that I don’t know. I don’t want to look at photos posted of people I don’t know. My feed is now so clogged with garbage I don’t want to see, I don’t really want to wade through it all. I try to hide stories but if I refresh, they are all back again. Why bother having the “hide” option if it isn’t permanent????

  95. Jacqui Graham says:

Thanks, Facebook, for this article explaining the changes. It helps me understand why you have chosen to once again mess around with what I thought was a perfectly good system! What I don’t understand is why you keep springing new things on us without warning or explanation.

I do not appreciate waking up to a new system. Any other company using similar business practices would quickly lose customers. Say I turned on my TV this morning, only to discover that the channel numbers had been reassigned to reflect my favourite shows – and the channels I rarely visit had disappeared? Do you think I would stay with the service provider? What if the gear shift on my car was suddenly replaced with an array of unlabeled buttons? A crash would surely follow.

While I can see the logic behind some of the changes, they have taken away my right to choose. I LIKED the top news and recent news options. And why did you remove the word “account”, forcing me to search in vain for the link? How does that improve my Facebook experience?

The one change I like is the ability to sort friends and family from casual acquaintances.

The only reason I have not abandoned Facebook is that I am the admin of two pages and two groups. That, and Facebook Scrabble.

    Jacqui

    • support says:

Jacqui, I’m glad you liked the article, however Facebook did not post it, Lujure did! :)

As for the new system, i completely understand where you are coming from and agree completely. It was to much surprise waking up and discovering a change.

      • Jeffro says:

I agree with that. We woke up and a new FB change was shoved down our throats. I read in an article yesterday that said they are doing a bunch of upgrades next month. Good luck with that.

Hope you’re having a good time, cause I’m looking for options to FB.

  100. Ruth Ferguson says:

I do not mind the changes EXCEPT despite my frequent requests for the EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS as a page admin, I am not receiving them. Yet, other admins of the same page are receiving them.

    FRUSTRATED!

  101. Me says:

Every time Facebook changes stuff, it makes me wonder what else might be out there that wouldn’t p!ss me off first thing in the morning when I just want to check in and see how my friends/family are. Say what you will about the settings for the Close Friends, Family and Acquaintances lists … THEY DON’T WORK!!!! I don’t need to see that my 3rd cousin responded to someone about their hemorrhoids or that they like some stranger’s photo. I call the FB ticker “stalker feed” because YOU CAN’T TURN IT OFF and YOU CAN’T CONTROL WHAT OTHERS SEE ABOUT YOU. I will no longer be able to quietly surf while I’m at the office because it will show up in my boss’s feed. I had my privacy settings the way I liked them. People only had to deal with posts I wanted them to see. They didn’t have to see that I liked a recipe I saw on a blog I read. I’m beginning to think that Zuckerberg created FB so he could silently stalk some girl he liked. The stalker feed really solidifies that belief.

The changes, while I will have no choice but to get used to them or leave FB, SUCK!!! There is no other word for it. I have enough frustration in my life and don’t need it from something I used to be able to go to for a couple minutes of escape.

FACEBOOK, YOUR CHANGES SUCK and YOU SUCK!!!

  102. kudos for this all round changes and improvement. What is left out however in all this is a reminder button for your fans to comment on your latest posting.

I would have complained about the new changes – but I could not find a place to do it.

  104. Mawds says:

I have everything apart from the ticker. Am I the only one?

  105. Facebook just gave several thousand people a reason to go over and check out Google+. I mean why not learn their new system as opposed to Facebook’s new system. I compare the two to Wal-Mart and Target. Facebook is all cluttered and dysfunctional like Wal-Mart…..Google+ is clean, organized, pleasing to the eye.

  106. My issue with the change is that I used to be able to select via the drop down menu (the one that typically said most recent) to filter just the pages that I ‘liked’ to read all their updates and nearest I’ve been able to tell there is NO way to do that anymore.. That I don’t like, the rest I can adapt to.

  107. Vicki says:

Contrary to their stupid opinion, the folks at Facebook DO NOT know what is important to me. I would prefer to decide that for myself.

Perhaps it’s time to update my life to not include Facebook.

  108. I actually quite like most of the new changes…but there is one thing I REALLY need help with this is what I posted that has happened.:

WARNING WARNING..this guy added me as a co-worker that I never have been,,his page appeared on my profile even though I did not put it there and now I have a “SMART LIST” called “A Million People” that I did not create and I can’t get rid of it!!! I am SOOOO PISSED OFF!! Mükail’s Drawings..his links are below.

    https://www.facebook.com/artcenter01?sk=wall..

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-million-people/125559194211344?sk=wall&filter=1..

    https://www.facebook.com/mukails.drawings?sk=wall….

The PAGE is now called “Add Me Offical Page” and I have a SMART LIST called “Add Me Offical Page” that I can not delete. I have tried numerous things to delete that smart list, but FB has not given us the privilege of being able to delete. I have obliviously blocked the person from my profile and un liked the ART Centre page that I had liked….I had NEVER even LIKED the page that I have a smart list for!!!!

I would like also to know how someone who I don’t even know personally (I was networking with other artists) can list me as a co-worker and have his page photo on my profile…which obviously I have now deleted.

Any help would be gratefully received…I have also reported the pages.

    Thank you Sally

    • Marie Carmen says:

I have a similar though nowhere as serious problem. I added an employer on my Profile info page and then somehow ended up with a Smart List bearing the name of said employer. I have removed the employer’s name but the Smart List remains. It has no members since I never created the list in the first place. And of course I cannot delete it because it is a Smart List. Any suggestions on how to resolve would be very much appreciated.

      • support says:

        Hey Marie,

You should be able to go to Home>Lists> More and then find the Smart list, click the blue pencil looking edit button then click “Always Hide”
Let me know if this works :)

        • Marie Carmen says:

Thank you much for the follow-up, and the tip. I did not know about that AlwaysHide option – nice to know. Looking things over, it appears that all the Lists (on my set-up anyways) already have the Always Hide option selected by default. :)

My concern, however, really had to do with how to actually DELETE the “empty” Smart Lists. While continuing to try to find a solution online, I have now realized that many people are complaining about the same thing: “orphan” lists remaining in place even though the info in the associated field (e.g. school, employer) has been removed. With no option available to the user to delete the “Smart” Lists, anyone adding and removing data from their personal Profile info ends up with a long listing of Lists populated with pointless empty lists. :(

Thank you again for having taken the time to respond!

          • support says:

No problem! I’ve also been searching for a way to delete them, but it seems as though that option doesn’t exist yet :/ Hopefully Facebook will add one in the future if there are enough people complaining about it!

  111. Allison says:

Kill the ticker. I can’t stand anything scrolling, hopping, winking or flickering at me as I’m trying to read. Causing eye fatigue and a headache.

  112. Simon Reeks says:

Don’t worry folks it’s just your friendly HOMELAND SECURITY’s way of spying on you more easily. Don’t blame FACEBOOK, they are just doing their part as good paranoid AMERICAN citizens. LOL

  113. Rachel says:

So if I want to see everything my friends post, I now have to go and change the settings for almost 300 friends one by one??? Pffft!

Re the ticker: If you use Google Chrome, someone has already created an app to get rid of it (and it works well.)

I think it’s interesting that most of my supposed “top news” was from business pages (I guess because pages don’t have customisable subscription levels) and news that I consider to actually BE important (such as updates concerning my friend’s three year old son’s battle with cancer) was cast out into outer facebook darkness.

On the subject of subscriptions, why would anyone want to subscribe to a friend’s feed but not actually be their friend? Imagine saying to someone in real life, “Hi, I’d really like to have regular updates from you, but I don’t actually want to engage in any kind of relationship with you.”

I do appreciate the fact that I get to use facebook for free, but is it too much to ask for a simple chronological newsfeed with nothing hidden, removed or changed? Human beings live linear lives – that needs to be reflected in our virtual lives as well.

  114. kaykay says:

The thing I don’t like about it is the fact Facebook now decides for itself what I may or may not want to read and look at – for example I don’t speak to many people regularly but what if an acquaintance got pregnant for example – big news but not like facebook could know?! isn’t like changing your relationship status (Though I’m sure it’ll start something similar!)

  115. Bertie says:

I like the new feature not needing 25 likes anymore. I immediately claim one of my pages that only got 15 likes and it worked but when tried to claim another page that only got 5 likes it did not worked. So my question what is the new qty of like’s we need?

That saves me having to figure it all out so thanks for that. V useful. FB always changes – that will never change!

  118. Deb Ragno says:

Give us an OPTION button to revert back to the old FB. I do not like the feed broken up in bits and pieces. I want everything in exactly the order it was posted, not broken into categories. Also, I now see friends’ posts to their friends with whom I am not friends. It is like being in the middle of a conversation that I have no business being part of at all. And that is at the “most updates” setting. I don’t want to go to the “important updates only” setting because what I think is important might not be what FB thinks is important and I might miss out on something. I almost feeling like someone at FB is getting a kick out of playing God and has appointed themselves as the all-knowing wise one to whom all of us must bow.

  119. Peg C. says:

I literally DETEST these new changes. The ticker which is SO obviously a rip-off of Twitter is ENDLESSLY annoying. I cannot stand anything flashing, scrolling, twitching, blinking, playing without my starting it, on my screen. This horrendous feed is showing stuff I don’t care about including people I’m not even friends with. Not only don’t I want to see what anyone else is doing, I don’t want anyone else bugged to death with what I’m doing! As for the news feed, it is virtually useless to me. Also with birthdays, now you write to your daily birthday friends in a child window, you don’t go to their walls (which is bad, IMHO), and if you wish happy birthday to multiple people and hit enter, it only sends for the most recent one. You have to repeatedly click on a birthday name to open the child window and send another message. This is for every friend having a bd that day! MISERABLE programming.

There should be a way to abolish or reverse all these changes. I have a number of friends looking at Google+ as an alternative though all of us would have to move at once (there’s 1000s of us). I guess we don’t matter since FB is forcing this down the throats of hundreds of millions. FB is CRAP. Every upgrade is a DOWNgrade now. And everything is buggy and glitchy, like the comment and messaging windows that bounce. I think all the programmers are on crack.

  120. Jay Gee says:

    Google+, Here I come!!

  121. Jim Kress says:

“When you visit Facebook, you should see the things you’re most interested in…”

So who defines what I’m “most interested in”? Some person who has total antipathy toward my views or interests so they suppress the things in which I’m REALLY interested? Some algorithm designed by a similar person or group of people to do the same?

We know that Facebook as an organization is an Obama tool. They have said they support Obama. Why should we trust them not to filter out all the anti-Obama information and just allow us to see the pro-Obama garbage that this person, or persons, define that “interest us”?

This whole “what I’m most interested” modification smacks royally of censorship and selective propagation of Facebook approved propaganda to me. If they don’t get rid of this unilaterally implemented (and unchangeable by me) censorship/ filtering, Facebook becomes nothing more than an pro-Obama propaganda forum where all information I see reflects the Facebook promise to support Obama.

That is unacceptable, destroys the credibility of Facebook and will force me to use a different, unbiased source that does not serve as a propaganda machine for ANYONE.

But for the moment…when you go to make a status update, you’ll see a Settings button. Click it and you can customize who sees and who can comment on your status.

  127. Don says:

This is the most worthless, totally biased, peice of garbage I’ve ever read. If you aren’t on Facebooks payroll, you must be interviewing or maybe just trying to kiss enough ass to get hired. By any objective viewpoint, Facebooks continuing ‘changes for the sake of change” are going to cost them some subscribers. Will people actually unsub? Maybe they won’t bother. But watch how fast the subscriber lists at Google and others start growing.

And your dumb ass comment about how many people didn’t complain? How many people ever bother to complain? And if you take that 750M subscriber list and cut our the dead people, multiple accounts, organizations with no “likes” etc, and people that have already switched and never log in any more you end up with a lot less. If there are eve 100M active subscribers I’d be amazed. This is the last time I’ll read any of the blather you try to write.

  128. Linda says:

I would like to know when Karnak came back from the dead and when he was hired by Facebook. If your programmers know how to read our minds and know what we want in the future, then they are psychic. PLEASE GIVE ME THE WINNING POWERBALL/LOTTERY NUMBERS!

This has been the most useless update. You need to poll the users of FB, not just sit in a room and bounce ideas off the rubber walls and then use the ones that hit the floor first.

Filtering was great~~you took that off the wall. We did have some filtering under the game requests on the sideboard and now that is gone.

Privacy is gone (ticker) as you can not remove yourself from the ticker. I have tried, but keep having to ‘remove from posting about such & such game’ or what ever it says. I have lost count as to how many times I have tried to block it for each game. I have given up on that.

Give us our old options back, make us happy instead of your programmers.

  129. cath says:

facebook needs to fix this live feed ticker, it has taken away our privacy, we should be able to comment on a pic or a status or like a status without it being announced to everyone, people can now follow us about more than they could before, we should have the choice of what we want to show in the live feed ticker. FIX NOW PLEASE!

    • Alex says:

I agree Cath! It definitely makes you think twice about all of your Facebook actions doesn’t it?!

    • Billy Joe says:

I agree. The changes in the news feed suck a lot, but people will get used to it just like every other feed change. (Although they’re kidding themselves that everything is still there, I’m missing a ton of updates in this mess.) But the ticker is a huge problem, both aesthetically speaking and security-wise. Just get rid of it and things would improve vastly.

  130. Birgit says:

I read this article hoping for some information on how to cut back on the extra crap that is now hitting my facebook. I’m now seeing when my friends comment on their friends pages and photos. I don’t know their friends and I don’t have time to scroll through all their comments. Why do I get all that stuff now when I didn’t yesterday? I really enjoyed keeping up with my friends on facebook. Now it just seems like I waste my time wading through garbage to find the stuff I really want to read. DISLIKE!!!

  131. Chris says:

I would like to know how to keep my comments on my friends’ posts, photos private to only our mutual friends. Right now, my privacy is set as tight as I can make it and when I comment on, let’s say, Mr. X’s status my friend (who isn’t friends with Mr. X can see my posts). I have blocked all of my photo albums and personal information to only FAMILY and CLOSE FRIENDS, hoping to thwart this, but there is no place to set my comments view.

    Help anyone?

  132. Dear Kevin,
Good Morning. While you and your staff see these changes as a better way of doing things, some of us want a choice on our likes and dislikes and changes. After working 8 to 12 hours, getting homework done withkids, and all our other daily task.. once done I SIT down with my facebook to checkup, check out, and visit friends and family for all over the country… the last thing i want is to have to learn something new in order to get this task done. i want a choice in what i want UPDATED and switched for me. maybe i want some of your ideas but the new top stories, and editing my what im seeing on my page is crazy. to much and too many extras. i want simple- easy.

    Thank you for your time,
    Jessica Wagaman

  133. Sperry says:

    Some salient points.

Facebook is in the business of making money for its investors.
FB makes its money by selling your eyeballs to advertisers.
FB “tests” their changes on a “representative sample” of users.
    The sample is very small.
The sample consists of what the marketing department thinks the advertisers believe their market is.
FB has quite a bit of money invested in these latest “improvements”.
FB is not going to back down or reverse themselves regardless of how valid the complaints are.
If, and ONLY IF, 20% or more FB users close their accounts, AND the advertisers get wind of it, then and ONLY THEN will FB consider revoking their changes.
This is the reality of the world.

  134. Kelly says:

Where did they put the birthdays at?

  135. Billy Joe says:

They lie anyway. Some people can still show up in the news ticker even if your profile is set to private. Mine does, we tested it with friends of friends. My privacy settings are now void, and it sucks. This article is pure bull.

  136. Trubrit says:

It wasn’t broken so why did they ‘fix’ it? Ridiculous and Twitter looking better all the time now!

  138. Good post, good info on the recent changes Facebook made to their site. Very clear and easy for anyone to understand. Nice job! :)

There will be some fanpage changes in the next week or so that will dramatically affect businesses and people who promote their products on there…

  139. Rossanna says:

Hey Everyone— as it turns out, the reason why FB has made these changes is to make more money. Basically, they are trying to be one all/be all go to source for all our wants/needs on the internet. You know how you go to google to look up things, maybe products? And Amazon keeps track of your purchases and based on what you bought in the past, they make recommendations? Well, FB wants to do that for us too. They think that by prioritizing our ‘friends’ stories that we will be ‘influenced’ in purchasing a particular product (music, movie, book, apparel, etc.) Basically, the new layout is to influence our spending and consumerism. Sorry, but I think its still a dumb idea, I’m happy to be an individual and while I do have some common interests w/ my friends, I certainly don’t want to be a clone. Anyway, I highly doubt that FB will revert back to what we had before. Take a look at the NY Times article:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/technology/facebook-makes-a-push-to-be-a-media-hub.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=facebook&st=cse

  140. Pam says:

What would be the reason why neither my husband nor I have seen anything of this ticker everyone is so hysterical about?? Even though I’m pretty sure it will just be an annoyance that, it turns out, I’ll be sorry I asked about because I won’t be able to turn it off, I feel a little left out!

  141. Kenny says:

At first I did not like the new look of Facebook and grumbled just a little. After having a chance to use it for several days now, I must say that I really think it is an improvement over what we had. I have more control over the information that I want to be displayed on my page and for that I am very grateful. Also, the information on this webpage helped quite a bit. http://blog.lujure.com/2011/09/21/newfacebookchanges/

  144. Carole says:

Facebook is getting on my last nerve. AND THEY DO NOT CARE WHAT WE WANT! I HATE THE NEWS FEED NOW! All I see are people saying they also hate it! OLD stories are on top and I have to search for new ones. Have I mentioned how much I hate the changes? They are NOT an improvement and I also Hate the loss of privacy now. When a friend post on THEIR friends wall it now shows up on my news feed, that is NOT right. Now when I post somewhere ALL my friends see it, it has made me STOP posting, it is NOT the business of others to see every move I make!
Facebook should ALLOW us to decide which format we want! They are NOT improving it, its making people angry!

  145. Magdalena says:

      Madalena,

Hmm, I know with Facebook there are delays when sending out the updates to everyone, but you should have it by now. Are you referring to the ticker? or Timelines?

      -Seth

  146. John says:

Yeah I have to put myself there with magdalena, Apparently facebook did all these changes and my facebook never changed, I still have the three options at the top “home, profile, account” I still have news feed options like top news and most recent, i had the ticker for like 2 days and the new headliner for like the same two days but then it reverted back to the old style so i have no ticker either. I have none of this, my fb hasn’t changed one bit. I guess I’m lucky for the time being. I know it’s my account as well because my fb app on my iPhone is also the same even with the latest app update change they JUST released. I still have a most recent button whereas most of my friends do not haha. Oh well, I’m not complaining just wondering why some people’s fb’s never changed.

    • support says:

Hmm same thing happened to me! Except I had the “New Facebook”, ticker and all, for a week or so, then all the sudden im now back to the old profile with “Home, Profile, Account” and with top news and most recent.
      I wonder what’s going on with that…

Buuuut then facebook screws up their chat system, and now ticker is official…… Ticker!!!!!?!!? HOW STUPID IS THAT :@ R.I.P any privacy!!!!! before you just removed updates on your wall about your activity to hide it. now….? Every goddamn single friend of yours being online at the time will be able to stalk the crap out of you. And the other way around I REALLY dont CARE IF BOB LIKED BEN’S PHOTO, BEN BEING A FRIEND OF FRIEND…….

  152. Angelo says:

Lujure’s business model is to bait and switch! Well I just got the surprise of my life. Lujure, claims that they clearly tell new users that you can only use their service to publish one tab on only one fan page. Yet you can create one tab on multiple fan pages … they do not actually warn you when you do this and they certainly do not place any restrictions on creating a tab on multiple fan pages. But they do not allow you to create more than one tab on any given fan page. The clear strategy employed by Lujure is thus to create the impression that their “free” service provides one tab PER fan page. At least that is the understanding I walked away with. Lujure encourages this.

Then about a month or two after I had created a single Lujure tab on several of my fan pages, I signed into my account to discover that all the tabs, save one, had been removed from my free account. With not even the courtesy of a warning such as … “Dear user, you may have understood the ‘terms’ of the free account. Even though we allowed you to create one tab on multiple fan pages and did not warn you at any time that you went beyond the first fan page, you cannot actually do that. So we are going to remove all of the tabs except one. Please tell us which tab that will be. Otherwise, you can pay $30/month and retain all the tabs you created. You have 24 hours from the time you opened this email warning to respond.”

But such a courtesy, if it could even be called a courtesy, was not offered. Instead, you will walk in one day and see that all the tabs (save one) have been removed without any warning. This is the “price” you will be forced to pay for the “free” account offered by Lujure. What was worse was that they then held me hostage by saying that I had to pay to recover my lost tabs. No warnings, nothing. A clear case of bait and switch.

I spoke directly with Nathan, the CEO of this company, who indicated that he wholeheartedly endorses this approach for his business. One day, Nathan, you will eventually find out where companies with unethical business practices end up.

My advice to Facebook users is not to use Lujure’s so-called “free” account. And if you love their paid service, you should think about what risk you are taking with your business when you do business with unethical companies.

Nathan, I know that you are reading this comment. You have four choices: (1) Not publish this comment; (2) Tell your users that I am making this up or continue to claim that the terms of your “free” account are clear when it certainly was not clear to me; (3) Not respond and let people decide for themselves whether my complaint is fair; (4) Acknowledge that Lujure’s practice of luring unsuspecting Facebook users to use your “free” service but then turning around and holding their tabs hostage is unethical and promising that Lujure will stop this practice of bait and switch.

Knowing your sense of business ethics, I think I know which choice you will make.

    G. Angelo Bernard
Someone who learned the hard way

    • Nathan says:

Angelo, I am extremely grateful you took the time to write this. I am more appreciative that you took the time to call me earlier today.

As many will testify, I like to stay very close to all Lujurians – even if that means giving out my phone number of which I’ll answer 24/7.

Unfortunately, I am not certain how we could make it more clear. On our pricing page, it clearly says “How Many Tabs Can I Create? One”, AND, “How Many Pages Can I Use Lujure On? One”. One tab. One fan page. This is what our free plan offers.

I am sorry you feel that we were baiting and switching you. The fact is we pride ourselves on being able to offer a free account at all. I am also sorry you feel I have poor ethics. In the end, nothing stays secret online. That’s the beauty of social media!

I’ll let others respond regarding how they feel about Lujure’s business practices and ethics. In the meantime, I am going to get back focused on creating a remarkable product.

      Thanks,

      Nathan
      CEO, Lujure

I hate the ticker and often choose not to be visible for chat because I just want to log in and play a game or do my own thing. People see my posts on the ticker and know I am online… I can’t enjoy being on my account incognito when I want to. The only way to get your name off their ticker is to have each of your friends take it off by going through a series of clicks which most people are reluctant or not interested in doing. I have twitter and rarely use it, why do I need something similar on FB? And don’t even get me started on the new timeline.
